In fact, if it seems most of the businesses around San Diego's Ocean Beach neighborhood are independent or locally owned, it's because the community has actively opposed corporate chains from opening in the area over the years, with only a few in existence even today. Therefore, residents and visitors get to enjoy a thoroughly unique selection.

The San Diego Unified School District manages the public schools serving Ocean Beach residents, including Ocean Beach Elementary School, Magnolia Science Academy San Diego, and High Tech High School. Private schools serving the community include Pioneer Programs and Warren-Walker School. In addition, those wanting to enroll in continuing education programs can register for classes at the University of California - San Diego, San Diego Community College, and San Diego State College.
